As a staunch supporter of the local tourism sector, I couldn’t be happier with the increasing number of tourists arrivals in the country.
Over the past few years, however, the hostel business in the country boomed side by side with the growth in the tourist arrivals. Among the popular hostels nowadays are Our Melting Pot, MNL Guesthouse, Red Carabao, Welcome Home Guesthouse and Pink Manila.
High brow hotel owners may frown upon the mushrooming of these hostels, insisting that such facilities only cater to backpackers and budget-conscious travelers. In my experience however, this is not necessarily true.
I’ve met a lot of travelers over the years who stay at hostels, not because they are poor. Instead, they only want to get their money’s worth. Why would a traveler spend so much on his hotel room when he will spend his whole day outside, marveling at a locations’ natural wonders.
Anyways, the growth of the hostel business continues and there is no end in sight anytime soon and that’s great news.
Last November, a new hostel opened up in the heart of Burgos and Makati Avenue, to quiet fanfare. Instead of spending too much money on hype, they spent it in making a cool and cozy hostel where travelers can really relax and enjoy.
Full Disclosure: I have not tried staying at this hostel overnight but I was lucky enough to get a peak inside it during a movie party thrown by the owner for its residents.
The interiors were bright and colorful, giving you that feeling of familiarity and ease. They have private, fan and dorm rooms with correspondong rates (P1,400 for private, P600-700 per bunk inside the dorm rooms, and they have P500 fan rooms).
Those rates are inclusive of breakfast, free linens, towels and wi-fi. They have lots of comfort rooms to cater to their guests so there’s really no need to wake up and fight your way to take a shower. The place has 24-hour security and CCTV so you feel secure.
But what I really like with Lokal hostel is their rooftop that has a gorgeous view of the Makati Avenue skyline.
Lokal hostel is also centrally located along Burgos Street, and is therefore very cool with some of the coolest joints in the area such as Chupacabra, H&J among others. It is also 5 minutes away from Rockwell and Powerplant.
Lokal is located at 3F 5023 P. Burgos St., Brgy Poblacion, Makati City.
